4-H Youth and Development

Our 4-H program provides a creative a supportive environment in which culturally diverse youth and adults can reach their full potential. Our local county program works to develop life skills to help young people become self-directed, productive citizens. We also work to empower adult volunteers who multiply the efforts of our local county Extension staff. In 2005 the 4-H program had 119 traditional 4-H members, 355 in organized community clubs and a grand total of 2,050 youth reached through 4-H programming and 2,356 total enrolled projects. The San Miguel County 4-H Youth Development Program is managed by Patrick Padilla, 4-H/Agriculture Agent with the guidance and direction of the 4-H advisory committee. We have 5 major clubs in San Miguel County: Blue Ribbon Wranglers, Blazing Saddles, High County 4-H, Pecos River Roughriders and Ride to Pride 4-H clubs. The organizing of a new 4-H club in the valley area is currently in effort.

4-H currently reaches approximately 5% of the potential youth under the age of 18 in San Miguel County. In order to avoid the negative influences such as crime, drugs, poverty, and teen pregnancy, youth must gain life skills.

Expanded 4-H Programming

4-H programming reaches approximately 5% of youth under the age of 18 in San Miguel County. Approximately 60% of said youth are Hispanic. Current issues in San Miguel County are drugs, crime, teen pregnancy, and teen suicide.

Volunteers

Currently there are 184 Volunteers leaders in San Miguel County. More Volunteers are constantly needed to expand the county 4-H program.
